Introduction
The New Jersey Council of the Blind (NJCB) is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing the lives of people who are blind or have low vision throughout New Jersey. Through advocacy, education, and community-building activities, NJCB offers resources, networking, and programs designed to increase independence and broaden opportunities. The organization also supports academic advancement by awarding scholarships to students who are blind or visually impaired pursuing further education.
Scholarship benefits
- A $1,000 cash award
- Complimentary first-year membership in the NJCB
- Public acknowledgement in NJCB’s quarterly newsletter and on the council’s Facebook page and website
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a New Jersey resident
- Be certified as legally blind or visually impaired
- Be enrolled full time as an undergraduate, graduate, or vocational student for the 2026–2027 academic year
Application checklist
To apply, submit the following:
- A completed scholarship application form
- A letter from a physician verifying legal blindness or visual impairment, or documentation showing services with the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired
- Three letters of recommendation from teachers, school counselors, employers, or other community advocates (family members may not serve as references)
- Academic records (copies of high school or college transcripts)
- A summary of extracurricular involvement, leadership positions, volunteer work, or other service activities
