CSEA Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Onondaga County Civil Service Employees Association
Introduction
Dependents of union members may qualify to receive scholarships through both CSEA and AFSCME programs. Several additional awards are also offered by affiliated groups and local organizations.
Eligibility
Current eligible dependents of members may apply for the scholarships described below. Other scholarships can be found through Union Plus, CSEA Region 5, local unions and units, and many AFSCME affiliates.
CSEA Scholarships
- Annual awards: CSEA grants twenty-four (24) scholarships of $1,000 each under the Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarship and Thomas H. McDonough programs.
- Additional awards: Pearl Insurance and MetLife each provide a one-time $2,500 scholarship (two separate awards).
- Application availability: Forms become available for download on January 31 and can be obtained from Unit and Local Presidents beginning in mid-February.
- Deadlines and automatic consideration: Submitting a Flaumenbaum application automatically enters the applicant for the Pearl Insurance and MetLife $2,500 awards. The application deadline for these scholarships is April 15.
- Follow-up scholarships: Recipients of the Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarship may apply for the Thomas H. McDonough Scholarship; application packets are mailed to qualifying students in late August.
- Special program — J. J. Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund: This fund is reserved for children of members who were killed or rendered totally disabled while performing public service duties, or who died while an active CSEA member. The application deadline for the J. J. Kelly Memorial Scholarship is October 1.

AFSCME Scholarships
AFSCME administers multiple scholarship opportunities for members and their children, including one (1) $5,000 award annually and ten (10) awards of $2,000 each. For full details and application instructions, visit the AFSCME scholarship webpage or call 1-800-588-0374.
