New England Newspaper and Press Association Scholarship

The Journalism Education Foundation of New England (JEFNE) is accepting applications for the 2026 New England Journalism Scholarship Program. The program will award scholarships of up to $2,000 to talented student reporters, editors, photographers, and multimedia storytellers from across New England.
Administered by the New England Newspaper & Press Association (NENPA), the scholarship supports as many as ten promising students committed to careers in journalism or related fields. Each year the program also recognizes one outstanding recipient with the MacGregor Fiske Award for exceptional promise in the profession.
Important dates and amount
- Award amount: Up to $2,000 per recipient
- Number of scholarships: Up to 10
- Application deadline: March 27, 2026
Who may apply
- Must be a resident of one of the New England states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.
- Residency, not the location of the college or university, determines eligibility; applicants may be enrolled at institutions outside New England.
- Eligible applicants are high school seniors (planning to begin college in Fall 2026) and undergraduate college students pursuing journalism or a related major. Graduate students are not eligible.
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
Required application materials
Applicants must submit the following items:
- Cover letter
- Transcript
- Résumé or brief biography
- Letter of recommendation
- Portfolio containing at least three published or class-produced journalism pieces
How to submit
1. Complete the online application form. After you submit it you will receive a confirmation email with instructions for sending the required documents to the program administrator.
2. Send all materials as PDF or Word attachments.
3. If you include links to online work, compile them into a single document and attach that file—do not paste individual story links in the body of the email.
4. If file size is an issue, contact the program administrator for help.
5. Applicants will be notified if any required documents are missing.
