Intro
The Ethel Price Heckman Bland Music Award honors students from the greater Tidewater region who demonstrate strong musical understanding and willingly contribute their talents to the community. Applicants do not have to plan a college major in Music or Music Education — musical paths vary, and all are welcome to apply.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Reside in rural southeast Virginia, including one of these localities: Suffolk, Sussex, Surry, Isle of Wight, or Southampton counties.
- Be on track to graduate from high school in the current calendar year and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Have at least three years of formal vocal or instrumental instruction.
- Actively share musical abilities with the broader community — for example through teaching, performing, outreach, or similar activities.
- Intend to continue developing musically after high school through further study, ongoing performance, teaching, community engagement, or related pursuits.
- Provide the names of one or two sponsors who can confirm the applicant’s training, skills, and grasp of basic music theory.
