Overview
The Bank Iowa Spirit of Chandy Scholarship was established to honor the memory of former Bank Iowa Vice Chair Chandy Barr Clanton and to carry forward her influence in the communities we serve. Each year, Bank Iowa typically grants up to 21 scholarships of $1,000 each to deserving high school students. Scholarship opportunities are announced at the start of each year.
Who may apply / Application requirements
Students who wish to be considered must submit a completed application. Applicants are responsible for collecting and providing all documentation and information specified on the application form. Submissions are evaluated based on the materials provided by the applicant. Applications for 2026 will close on March 23rd.
About Chandy Barr Clanton
Chandy was known for her zest for life and her drive for excellence. A successful businesswoman, accomplished athlete, and gifted pilot, she was also a devoted mother to two sons, Harrison and Drew. Her warmth and energy left a lasting impression on many who knew her.
Born into a family of aviators, Chandy learned to fly from her father, Harry Barr, who co-founded Bank Iowa. She won several international competitions, performed for large audiences across the years, and was a three-time member of the United States Unlimited Aerobatic Team.
Service to others was central to her life. Chandy mentored aspiring pilots, volunteered at her sons’ school, served as a missionary pilot for the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and often spoke in churches about her career and the role her faith played in it.
Tragically, on July 10, 2009, at age 36, Chandy died while piloting her Zivko Edge 540 during a training flight near Tarkio, Missouri, when the aircraft crashed into a bean field.

Bank Iowa is proud to continue Chandy’s legacy by supporting students through the Bank Iowa Spirit of Chandy Scholarship and by providing opportunities that reflect her commitment to excellence, community, and service.
