Intro
The Explore More Scholarship provides a $10,000 award to support students pursuing careers in STEM, particularly in Mining Engineering. Awards are open for the 2025–26 cycle. We welcome applications from new incoming freshmen and community-college transfer students beginning their first semester at the University of Utah. Applicants from historically underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
Eligibility
- Incoming first-year students (resident and nonresident) and transfer students from community colleges starting their first semester at the University of Utah.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on the most recent academic transcript (high school or college).
- Demonstrated strong preparation in mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
- Leadership and extracurricular involvement will also be considered.
Award details
- Amount: $10,000 total ($5,000 per semester).
- Term: One-time award (nonrenewable).
- After completing one year, recipients who maintain a 3.4 cumulative GPA or higher while following the approved curriculum may be invited to apply (part-only application) to transition into The Browning Scholarship, which provides $7,500 annually.
- Approximately four Explore More Scholarships are awarded each year.
Application overview
- Applications open for 2025–26 and are reviewed in the order they are received (first-come, first-served).
- The application comprises two parts (PART I and PART II); both sections must be completed. PART II requires watching a set of short videos and responding to three related questions.
Required supporting materials
- Two letters of recommendation.
- Most recent transcript (high school or college).
- Responses to three video-based questions (each response limited to 300 words or fewer).
Note: Your application will not be evaluated until all required documents are included in your applicant file.
How to submit
- Complete both parts of the application and assemble the supporting documents.
- Submit the application and supporting materials as PDF attachments via email to mining-info@lists.utah.edu, or mail them to the Department of Mining Engineering (University of Utah). Applications missing any required items will remain incomplete and will not be reviewed.
Evaluation and notification
- Priority deadline: December 1. Applicants who meet this deadline will be notified of outcomes by January 15.
- Regular deadline: February 15. Applicants who apply by this date will be notified by March 30.
- Applications are assessed based on the stated criteria and the materials provided.
Additional conditions
- Scholarship funds are contingent upon admission to the University of Utah, declaring Mining Engineering as your major, and remaining enrolled in the approved program of study.
