Overview
Frank Der Yuen was a globally recognized aeronautical engineer, airline executive, and consultant. A graduate of Harvard and MIT, he engineered the all-weather, self-propelled passenger boarding bridges found at major airports worldwide. Mr. Der Yuen served as Executive Director of the Honolulu Airlines Committee and as a vice president of Aloha Airlines. He contributed to the design of the Daniel K. Inouye (Honolulu) International Airport and helped establish the Pacific Aerospace Museum formerly located there.
About the Frank Der Yuen Aviation Scholarship
The Frank Der Yuen Aviation Scholarship honors Mr. Der Yuen’s contributions to aviation by providing competitive financial support to Hawaii residents pursuing aviation-related education or training. Each year, grants of no less than $1,000 are awarded to Hawaii residents who have been accepted into, or are currently enrolled in, an aviation-related program at an accredited trade school, college, or university. Awards are granted without regard to gender, race, religion, or national origin.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a resident of Hawaii.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident.
- May not be the parent, spouse, child, grandchild, or sibling of any current Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum officer, director, or employee.
- Must demonstrate commitment to pursuing a career in aviation or aerospace.
Required Documentation (before funds are issued)
- An acceptance letter and course outline or curriculum from the vocational school, college, or university where the applicant will study.
- Note: Scholarship funds will be sent directly to the institution (via mail or wire) once award conditions are met.
How to Apply
1. Create an AwardSpring account or log into an existing account.
2. Complete the general application form on AwardSpring. If you meet minimum eligibility, additional follow-up items will appear on your AwardSpring dashboard.
3. Complete the follow-up items, which include:
- A personal statement of approximately 750 words.
- Three letters of recommendation. Recommendation requests will be sent through AwardSpring, so you must provide recommenders’ email addresses. Recommenders must submit their letters via the secure link they receive. It is recommended to include one personal, one professional, and one academic reference when applicable.
Interview and Notification
- Applicants chosen for an interview will receive email notification with the interview date, time, and format.
- Final award decisions will be communicated by the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum when selections are complete (tentatively mid-May).
- Selected recipients will have up to 30 days to accept the scholarship and agree to the terms and conditions outlined in the award notice.
