ASM Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Introduction
The ASM Action in Education Committee oversees the Undergraduate Scholarship Program. The following explains the eligibility requirements, application procedure, selection criteria, and important deadlines that apply to all ASM undergraduate scholarships.
Eligibility (all of the following must be met)
- Be a member of ASM International or a Material Advantage student member.
- Have an intended or declared major in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Students in closely related science or engineering majors may be considered if they show a strong academic focus and clear interest in materials science.
- Have completed at least one year of college.
- Be enrolled at a university that offers an accredited science and engineering program leading to a bachelor’s degree.
How to apply
To be considered, you must both complete the online application and submit all supporting documents by 28 February. Required materials should be emailed to ScholarshipsUG@asminternational.org and include:
- Official transcript
- Resume/CV
- Photograph
- Two letters of recommendation (at least one must come from a professor, a co-op/internship supervisor, or a work-study manager)
Selection process
Scholarships are designed to encourage and support students who show promise and interest in metallurgy/materials engineering and related careers. The Selection Committee evaluates the complete application package—application form, transcript, personal statement, and recommendations—and weighs multiple factors, including:
- Academic achievement: grades, selected coursework, and interdisciplinary skills/interests
- Commitment to the field: prior knowledge of metallurgy/materials engineering, relevant activities or jobs, and potential for a related career
- Personal qualities: motivation, maturity, social values, and career goals
Geographic and financial considerations
- Except for the ASM Outstanding Scholar Awards, scholarships are awarded only to students studying in North America and require demonstration of financial need in addition to academic merit.
- ASM Outstanding Scholar Awards are available to international students and are merit-based; financial need is not considered for these awards.
Additional important information
1. Awards cover one academic year. Recipients must reapply if they wish to be considered in subsequent years. No applicant may receive more than two consecutive scholarship awards.
2. Institutions may nominate or permit any number of students to apply.
3. Colleges and universities are encouraged not to reduce other financial support when a student receives an ASM scholarship.
4. Applicants will be considered for every award for which they meet the criteria.
5. Submit all application materials together as part of your application.
6. All application materials must be received by 28 February.
7. Applicants will be informed after committee review; scholarship recipients will be notified by email no later than 31 May.
